This design brief was part of a project for my Graphic Design specialization at IDEP Barcelona. Our objective was to retell the story of the witch from a historic depiction as a literary character into modern day society.
Abracadabra: A Spellbound History of Women As Witches, aims to navigate the history behind the witch in the format of a fanzine that was both dynamic and eclectic in its portrayal of historic information, yet playful at the same time.
Re-Story
The Character of the witch has fascinated and intrigued both children and adults for a long time. The Witch often represents a captivating blend of magic, mystery and the unknown. By using this beloved character, we immerse ourselves in a shared cultural symbol that sparks curiosity and captivates readers of all ages.
The portrayal of witches in children’s literature has evolved over time. Previously depicted as purely evil and threatening figures, modern interpretations have provided more nuanced and complex representations.
By exploring the history and symbolism surrounding witches, our objectice is to shed light on broader themes related to gender roles stereotypes, and the social perception of women.
Statement
Abracadabra immerses readers in the mysterious world of these fascinating figures, exploring their cultural influence, historical legacy, and resonance in today’s society. The choice of witches as central characters aims to challenge their negative portrayal in tales and narratives, revealing how this reflects an ingrained social issue against women. Through this exploration, the project invites reflection on the power and transcendence of women throughout time, inspiring a reconsideration of their true value in our contemporary society.
